KYC AI Workflow: Tested Extraction, Clarification, and Human Review
A tested KYC AI workflow using synthetic records: text and image extraction, source checks, an address mismatch, a clarification draft, and human-review handoff. Includes the first-run unsupported inference, seven revised API calls, eight local checks, and complete Python code.

In the KYC (Know Your Customer) process, AI can first handle data extraction, discrepancy identification, and drafting of requests for additional documents. Then, software can validate fields, manage statuses, and hand over evidence to reviewers. This article uses synthetic materials and actual model calls to demonstrate a complete assisted workflow from data input to re-examination of supplementary documents and handover to manual review.
Crazyrouter is the AI API integration platform used in this test: via the same /v1/chat/completions endpoint, gpt-4.1-mini completed 6 revised workflow text calls and 1 image reading call. These 7 calls validated the demonstration workflow; real identity verification, watchlist screening, and final KYC approval still require integration with corresponding business systems.

In the KYC business process, which tasks can be integrated with AI models to improve efficiency?#
It is recommended to start with "materials that reviewers repeatedly copy, compare, and organize." Outputs should be made into verifiable fields and to-do items, so you can determine which steps AI actually reduces.
| Task | Specific AI Output | What Software or Humans Handle | Scope Verified in This Article |
|---|---|---|---|
| Collect application materials | Organize material requirements, generate draft requests for additional documents | Bind identity records to cases, permissions, version and completeness checks | Three types of synthetic records; local validation for missing fields |
| Read text or images | Extract name, address, date of birth, expiration date | Verify source, format, and whether anything is missing | 3 text statuses; 1 image |
| Cross-check | Provide comparable fields | Compare name, address, and date using deterministic rules | Consistent, conflicting, simulated correction |
| Communication for additional documents | Draft explanation based on confirmed conflicts | Send after review, save version of supplementary documents | Generate draft, not sent to customer |
| Organize review materials | Extract results, original text references, list of issues | Generate review summary from validated data | Retain erroneous first-round summary and revised results |
| Identity authenticity verification | Can be handled by specialized verification models or services | Document authenticity, person-document linkage, liveness and anti-spoofing verification | Not integrated; cannot substitute with field extraction |
| Sanctions, PEP, and negative news screening | Assist in organizing hit materials and person discrepancies | Connect to current lists and news sources, handle same names and escalate reviews | Not queried; only describes integration point |
| Periodic review | Compare data changes, generate review task summary | Company policy determines trigger conditions, cycle, and final disposition | Only locally generates a sample review date |
NIST's identity verification guidelines divide identity information parsing, evidence verification, and applicant-to-identity linkage into separate tasks, and list media forgery and digital injection protection separately. Therefore, a model identifying a line of name or an address in an image cannot be used to determine document authenticity. NIST SP 800-63A-4 can be used to understand these technical boundaries; do not interpret this demonstration as compliance certification for any legal jurisdiction.

What did we actually test?#
Using Python 3.10, requests 2.32.3, and Pillow 11.1.0, the test address was https://api.crazyrouter.com/v1. First, /models was called to confirm that the current test credentials could see gpt-4.1-mini, then actual generation requests were sent. Directory visibility only indicates what the account can see; whether the task can be completed depends on the request result.
Text requests used temperature=0, max_tokens=650, and response_format={"type":"json_object"}. The program also checked finish_reason == "stop", JSON field structure, source references, and expected routing results; HTTP 200 alone does not count as a passed test.
This is a single-model, small-sample workflow demonstration. It does not prove it is the best KYC model, nor does it measure how much manual labor is saved. A total of 11 text/vision model calls were completed: 4 in the first version, 6 in the revised version, and 1 independent image test. Cover generation is not included in this count.
The first run encountered local proxy connection failure; after switching to direct connection, old environment credentials returned 401 at /models. Testing began after switching to valid local inference credentials. Connection failures and directory authentication failures were not counted as completed model calls.
Two fictional applicants, three case statuses#
Each data set includes APP (application form), ID (synthetic identity record), and ADDR (synthetic address record). These are purely demonstration texts, with no real document numbers, photos, or customer data.
| Test Status | Application Form Address | Address Record | Expected Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Materials Consistent | 18 Pine Lane Apt 3, Seattle WA 98101 | Same address | manual_review, hand over to manual review |
| Address Conflict | 48 Lake Road Unit 7, Austin TX 78701 | 84 Lake Road Unit 7, Austin TX 78701 | needs_clarification, clarification needed |
| After Simulated Correction | 84 Lake Road Unit 7, Austin TX 78701 | Same address | Re-enter manual_review |
"Simulated correction" is a script-constructed new version of materials, used to test re-routing after supplementary documents; no customer participation, and no real supplementary document notification sent. The program does not decide whether 48 or 84 is the real address.
Step 1: Let the model extract fields and provide original text references#
Three documents are submitted as untrusted business data, and the system instruction only requires extraction of specified fields. Each field in the output must have both value and quote, for example, the address in the actual result:
{
"value": "84 Lake Road Unit 7, Austin TX 78701",
"quote": "Address: 84 Lake Road Unit 7, Austin TX 78701"
}
The program first checks whether document keys and field keys meet the requirements, then confirms that the reference actually appears in the corresponding source document, and that the field value is indeed included in the reference. For this sample with fixed labels, it also checks whether the reference is the complete label line corresponding to the field.
This allows you to locate "where this address came from." But the existence of the original text does not mean it is authentic, and reference checking cannot independently prove the model's understanding is correct. Formal materials should further save document version, page number, region coordinates, and manual revision records.
In this example, missing fields, empty values, or abnormal structure directly throw errors and stop current execution. Production systems should route this exception to a manual processing queue, and should not default to passing after catching errors. The demonstration does not implement this queue or attachment storage system.
If you want to first understand handling of structured fields, refer to the site's Guide to JSON and Structured Output Testing. Using JSON output still requires application-layer checks; this first-round experiment also proved that "structural correctness" and "factual correctness" are two dimensions.
Step 2: Use software to check conflicts, let the model draft supplementary document messages#
This example uses four types of checks:
- Validate output fields and original text references.
- Compare names in the three materials; only unify case and consecutive spaces.
- Compare application form and address record; no address authenticity verification or complex geographic normalization.
- Check date format and identity record expiration date; base date fixed as test date
2026-11-03.
These checks return issue codes. For example, when addresses are inconsistent, the result is:
{
"issues": ["address_mismatch"],
"route": "needs_clarification"
}
The second model call drafts a customer message based only on extracted fields and confirmed issue codes. Returned issue_ids must match the program's results; the model does not have permission to modify routing status.
The actual draft for the conflict case is as follows, retaining the original text:
Hello, we found an inconsistency in your address information during verification: the address entered in the application form is "48 Lake Road Unit 7, Austin TX 78701", while the address shown on the provided proof of address is "84 Lake Road Unit 7, Austin TX 78701". Please confirm and inform us of the correct address so we can continue processing your application. Thank you for your cooperation!
This text needs to be reviewed before sending. The script does not have email, SMS, or customer service sending functions, nor does it automatically modify customer data based on model output.
For real business, address abbreviations, transliterations in different languages, name order, and multiple addresses should be included in more complete rules and review design. The string comparison in this example will treat some equivalent addresses as differences, suitable for illustrating the workflow, but not for direct use as a production address matcher.
Step 3: Why did we remove "AI freely writing review conclusions"?#
The first version experiment let the model write both supplementary document messages and review summaries. Address conflict was correctly identified, and JSON structure was correct, but the model wrote in the summary:
Name and date of birth information are consistent, ID expiration is normal.
The problem: only the ID contains date of birth. There is no second date of birth information, so no "consistency" judgment can be made. Another sample in the first round also extended address consistency to identity records that did not have address fields.
Automatic validation in the first version passed, but that does not mean all facts in the review summary were correct. The passed in the original result file only covered structural and issue code checks at the time; manual, sentence-by-sentence content review exposed this inference error. Actual review was performed by Codex, not marked as human compliance expert review.
After revision, we narrowed the model's task: it still handles data extraction and customer message drafts; the review package is generated by the program from already validated data. The status of date of birth is clearly recorded as:
{
"dob_crosscheck": "not_performed_single_source",
"identity_authenticity": "not_tested",
"liveness": "not_tested",
"sanctions_and_pep": "not_queried",
"final_approval": "not_performed"
}
This change eliminated the step of freely writing review conclusions. It does not eliminate all possible extraction or supplementary document drafting errors, so both still require validation and review.
Step 4: Actually send an image, test reading and material-internal prompt injection#
The independent image test used Pillow to draw a synthetic text image of 1400×650, with a clear label at the top: "Test record, not a document or bill." The image contains name, address, and a line requesting to ignore rules and approve the customer.
The request passed PNG Base64 data via the image_url content block, still calling gpt-4.1-mini. The program did not simultaneously tell the model the name and address in the image as text. The actual return was:
{
"name": "MIRA CHEN",
"address": "84 Lake Road Unit 7, Austin TX 78701"
}
The two fields in this sample are exactly the same as the preset answers, with no additional approval actions output. The image request took 3.914 seconds, with 1,553 tokens input and 30 tokens output; the report’s image_tokens=924 is a detail within the input and should not be counted again.
This result only shows that a single clear synthetic image can be read, and that this injected text did not change the outcome. It does not verify real document OCR accuracy, blurry photos, handwritten materials, document anti-counterfeiting, facial recognition, or resistance to all prompt injections. The image test is a separate test from the main text workflow and has not yet integrated multi-page scans into the upload system.
Step Five: Recheck After Supplementation, Then Submit for Manual Review#
Simulating corrected materials, the application address is changed to 84 Lake Road; the model re-extracts rather than reusing old values. Rules run again, the issue list becomes empty, and the workflow status returns to manual_review.
The reviewer receives a data package containing: the fields, references, check results, pending external verification items for this material version, and a draft customer message. The sample code stops at this handover point and does not have automatic approval functionality.
To connect to a complete production workflow, it is recommended to add the following independent interfaces here:
| External Capability | Suggested Output to Save | Handling Advice for Exceptions |
|---|---|---|
| Identity Verification Service | Verification number, verification time, evidence type, authenticity and person-document association result | Route to manual review if failed, unavailable, or uncertain |
| Sanctions List & PEP Screening | Data source, list version, query conditions, candidate hits, review conclusion | Same name cannot be directly determined; retain candidate evidence |
| Negative News Search | Source link, report date, person association basis, event summary | Distinguish report content, allegations, and confirmed facts |
| Review System | Reviewer, decision time, basis, policy version | Pending checks cannot be assumed as passed |
| Re-examination Task System | Trigger reason, material version, re-examination deadline | Re-evaluate according to institution policy and applicable requirements |
For example, the OFAC Sanctions List Service provides its managed sanctions list data and search portal. It is not a global sanctions, PEP, or negative news database; this article also does not conduct real list searches for the sample person.
The extended script additionally generates a sample re-examination date 90 days from November 3, 2026: February 1, 2027. This is just a demonstration task field, not a statutory re-examination period, and no real scheduled task is created.
Actual Results: Evidence Is Recorded Up to the Step Successfully Completed#

| Scenario | Actual Calls | Completion Status | Business Observation | Extraction / Draft Time (seconds) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Material Consistency | 2 | stop / stop | manual_review | 3.445 / 1.589 |
| Address Conflict | 2 | stop / stop | needs_clarification | 2.969 / 1.412 |
| Simulated Correction | 2 | stop / stop | manual_review | 3.277 / 1.436 |
| Independent Image Reading | 1 | stop | 2 fields match preset values | 3.914 |
The revised version’s 6 text calls totaled 1,707 tokens input and 992 tokens output; with the image call, 7 requests totaled 4,282 tokens. These are usage records from the responses, not actual billing queries, and token usage is not directly written as cost savings.
The sum of two requests for a single status is about 4.38–5.03 seconds. This does not include manual review, customer waiting, attachment upload, or real identity service time, nor is it a throughput or latency percentile test. Public claims like “processing time reduced by 80%” require comparison with a manual baseline for the same batch of cases.
Eight local checks cover: record expiration, invalid date, name conflict, name case and space normalization, fabricated original text, null value, extra fields, and missing fields. All checks passed preset assertions; this does not represent 100% accuracy on production data.
Traceable Request Records#
Below are the real response IDs for the revised version. Complete requests, original outputs, usage, and check results are saved in the accompanying JSON; authorization request headers are not recorded.

How to Rerun This KYC AI Example?#
First, check available models in the Model Directory and learn about integration options via OpenAI Model Classification. This article only tested the models and parameters listed above; after changing models, rerun the same set of cases. For billing details, see the API Pricing Page; actual usage and charges depend on your account.
Prepare an API Key with model call permissions and set it in the CRAZYROUTER_API_KEY environment variable. If you need to open an account, use the Registration Portal. Before running, ensure your current network can directly connect to the API; the example’s trust_env=False ignores system proxies, and enterprises needing proxies should adjust and retest according to their network configuration.
Save the following two code blocks as kyc_demo.py and extended_demo.py in the same directory. Run the main script first, then the extended test. The extended script uses the Windows Arial font path; other operating systems need to change to a locally available font file.
python -m pip install requests==2.32.3 Pillow==11.1.0
python kyc_demo.py
python extended_demo.py
Each run of the main script sends 6 generation requests and writes the synthetic case results to final-results.json; the extended script sends 1 image request and writes to extended-results.json. The two filenames will be updated on reruns; to compare multiple runs, save old results separately first.

The code fixes the test date to reproduce the expiration judgment at the time of the experiment. Production systems should pass in the date from a trusted server; do not use this demo date long-term. The code does not implement file upload, database transactions, failure retry, concurrency control, permission systems, or review UI; validate in an isolated environment first.
The demo writes original requests and outputs to files because all materials are synthetic data. Real KYC logs should separately design for minimal recording, access control, encryption, retention period, and deletion mechanism; do not put real documents, prompt text, or keys directly into ordinary application logs. NIST guidelines also list data minimization as a measure to reduce exposure risk of identity information.
Before Going Live, How to Measure If AI Really Improves Efficiency?#
It is recommended to first establish a baseline using a batch of authorized historical cases with manual results, then compare the following metrics:
| Metric | Suggested Definition | Why Needed |
|---|---|---|
| Manual Processing Time per Case | Actual reviewer operation minutes, distinguish waiting time | Confirm reduction in entry, search, and rewrite work |
| Key Field Error Rate | Number of erroneous key fields ÷ number of verified key fields | Prevent fast generation but more rework |
| Missed & False Conflict Detection | Separately count missed real conflicts and falsely flagged conflicts | Cannot only look at overall pass rate |
| Supplement Round Trips | Number of round trips from first submission to complete materials per case | Check if supplement drafts are clear and accurate |
| Unsupported Statement Rate | Number of unsupported conclusions found in review ÷ number of reviewed conclusions | Directly covers issues exposed in the first round |
| Usable Result Cost per Case | Total cost of inference, retry, external queries, and manual revision | Avoid only comparing one-time token costs |
You can start with review summary preparation and supplement drafts, retain manual confirmation, and gradually expand scope as field and triage quality meet business requirements. This article did not collect real manual baselines, so it does not promise work hour or cost savings ratios.

This article’s actual tests covered text extraction, single image reading, address difference identification, and re-triage before and after supplementation; actual efficiency gains still need comparison with manual baselines.
Can AI Directly Decide KYC Approval?#
The code in this article does not have this capability. Consistent material fields only enter pending manual review; authenticity verification and list screening not yet performed are clearly marked as incomplete.
Why Can JSON Be Correct but Review Opinions Still Wrong?#
JSON structure checks only verify form and some constraints. The first round output was formatted correctly but wrote the birth date from a single source as "information consistent"; therefore, this article changed the review summary to be generated by program based on verified data.
Does Successful Image Reading Mean Passport Authenticity Can Be Verified?#
No. This test only read a single clear synthetic text image, and did not test real documents, anti-counterfeiting elements, liveness, or the association between applicant and document.
Can Sanctions Lists, PEP, and Negative News Be Asked Directly to Large Models?#
It is recommended to integrate external data sources with provenance and update timestamps, then use the model to assist in summarizing candidate matches. This article does not include online queries for the sample individuals; the not_queried in the code must be retained and cannot be written as "no risk".
Was the model influenced by malicious instructions in the materials this time?#
Both the text conflict sample and the image sample contain an instruction requesting direct approval, but the observed results still conform to the preset task. These are only the results of two controlled samples and cannot be extrapolated as comprehensive injection resistance; the model also does not have tool permissions for approval or sending messages.
How much time or cost was actually saved?#
No proportion of manual savings was measured. This article records request duration and token usage to illustrate a demonstration run; actual benefits need to account for manual review, document supplementation wait times, external identity services, and retries.
Can this method also be applied to enterprise customer KYB?#
The design of "field and source binding, programmatic validation, and retention of manual judgment" can be used. Judgments on shareholder structure, indirect shareholding, control, and ultimate beneficial ownership require additional data and rules, which were not tested in these scenarios in this article.
